Thousands of apartments under construction across Piedmont

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) – The Piedmont Triad is seeing an unprecedented amount of growth, and area leaders are trying to bring more housing units online.

Ben Brockschmidt, executive director of the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association, said there are roughly 14,000 apartments under construction across the Piedmont.

12,000 of those are in pre-construction, which means those companies are still doing paper work and working on zoning approvals.

There are only 1,300 new units ready for move-in.

“We do not have enough,” Brockschmidt said. “We don’t have enough at every level.”

City leaders in High Point say the economic development in Guilford and surrounding counties is leading people to the Triad.

“North Carolina is no longer a secret. We’re the second most moved to state in the country,” Brockschmidt said. “We have people coming here from all areas, all walks of life.”

High Point has seen the highest number of units approved in a decade with 379 multi-family units approved in 2021 and 331 in 2022.
