High Point police address crime at motels, hotels

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — After a deadly stabbing at the In Town Suites in High Point last weekend, we are taking a closer look at local motels and hotels that have been identified as hot spots for crime.

In 2020, then Police Chief Travis Stroud said five hospitality businesses in particular were of concern: a Motel 6, what was a Budget Inn, Intown Suites, the Travel Express Inn Motel and the Hotel NC.

There have been changes over the past four years, including to the names of the businesses, and one was even demolished, but three of them are still seeing hundreds of calls to police as recently as last year.

In late 2020, we investigated issues at five local hospitality businesses including the Travel Express Inn Motel on Green Drive after frequent code violations and safety concerns.

Three and a half years later, the restaurant that was on the property is no longer there.

“We’ve had some buildings that we tore down. The actual restaurant … was condemned. The owner demolished that section,” High Point Inspections Manager Christopher Whaley said.
