High Point high school athletes pursue athletic, academic success

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — As a high school athlete, many already have a lot to balance between keeping their academics high in the midst of practice and games, but sometimes, there’s even more on their plate.

Journie Barr and Shamayra Monk both transferred to T.W. Andrews High School this year, and little did they know, they both share the love of basketball and marching band.

“I can say Journie was probably my first friend I made coming to Andrews,” Monk said. “She’s been a really big help getting me through stuff. We both have similar interests.”

“I like having [Shamayra] as a teammate because she pushes me and I push her and we push each other in a way that I feel like it, strengthens our friendship,” Barr added. “Then in band we get to play together, have fun.”
