WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A $4-million grant is expected to bring change to East Winston-Salem.
It’s all going towards bettering the lives of young people on the east side of town.
Micha James, the director of Winston-Salem Trauma Resilient Communities, says opportunities like this don’t often come to this side of the city where low-income neighborhoods are located.
“But we have the opportunity to do right not only by the federal government but specifically our youth ages 12 through 17 in East Winston,” James said.
The Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded the four-year federal grant to the We Heal Together initiative.
It’s is a collaborative effort between the non-profitsAction4Equity, Crossnore Communities for Children and Forsyth Futures.
Shantae Graham, a community partner with Action4Equity, says you can’t put a dollar value on putting someone in a position to enable them to thrive.
“The money will do a whole lot for the program. It will allow us to be in a space to be able to do things with our kids, provide them with information as well as trauma informed care as social emotional learning activities,” Graham said.
