Duke Energy clears up confusion over new line item on bill

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — Several people in the Piedmont Triad are confused about their recent Duke Energy bill.

“I would just like to know what I am paying because there is nothing on this bill that tells me,” said Bobby Davis Sr. from Kernersville.

Davis found a $60 charge labeled as “summary of rider adjustment.” A Duke Energy representative says this is a new way of labeling the bill. That fee used to be included in the usage charge but now has been separated.

“It was very frustrating,” Davis said.

He went to his mailbox on Friday and found his Duke Energy bill. It was the same as every month, but what he didn’t see coming this time was a new line item charge.

“It was a $60 extra on the bill with seemingly no explanation on the bill as to why it was there,” Davis said.

Davis claims he waited an hour on the phone for customer service, and their representative could not explain the change.

We brought Davis’ questions to Duke Energy. Jeff Brooks, a spokesperson for the company, says a rider pays for essential parts of providing services to Duke Energy customers. It’s a miscellaneous line item that addresses things like fuel costs, renewable energy and storm costs.
