The 100th HPU Poll, conducted on February 5, 2024, shows that North Carolina’s registered voters are split in their preferences for the U.S. President, U.S. Congress, and state-level positions. The poll indicates a tight competition between the Republican and Democratic parties.
In the Presidential race, 43% of voters lean towards the Republican candidate, and 40% towards the Democratic candidate. Another 7% would consider a third-party candidate. The U.S. Congress race shows a similar pattern, with 44% favoring the Republican candidate, 41% the Democratic candidate, and 4% a third-party candidate.
The state-level races for Governor, House of Representatives, and Senate also reflect this division. The Democratic candidate is favored by 44% of voters for Governor and 43% for the House and Senate. The Republican candidate is close behind with 42% for all three positions. Around 4% of voters would consider a third-party candidate.
The poll also explored voters’ top concerns. The five most important issues for policymakers to address were identified as inflation (72%), national security (71%), school safety (70%), protecting democracy (66%), and general health care (66%). Other significant issues included veterans’ support (65%), education (64%), taxes (60%), immigration (60%), and voting integrity (59%).
