Man charged with DWI in fatal moped crash that killed 76-year-old man in Winston-Salem faces new charges

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A moped rider was fatally hit on Reynolda Road in December, and a man charged with DWI faces new charges, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department .

At around 11:12 a.m. on Dec. 13, Walter Lee Shipp Jr., 65, of Winston-Salem, was driving north on Reynolda Road in a 2008 Ford F-150 while J Jesus Chavez Arceo, 76, of Winston-Salem, was riding a 2017 Don Fang moped south on Reynolda Road.

Police say that Shipp was making a left at the intersection of Reynolda Road and Pratt Road and hit the moped.

Arceo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that Shipp stayed at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.

Shipp was charged with driving while impaired and taken into custody at the Forsyth County Detention Center.

On Feb. 6, The WSPD announced that Shipp has also been charged with:

  • misdemeanor death by vehicle
  • failure to yield right of way causing serious injury
  • driving while license revoked

He was given a $10,000 bond.
