WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A big project in the city is one step closer to completion. It will bring affordable housing to the Northeast community, and 81 apartments will soon be ready to go for new tenants to move in. This marks a major milestone for the project.
The multi-phase project calls for tearing down the 244-unit Cleveland Avenue Homes low-income housing community and replacing it with 404 new units in the Northeast area of the city.
Cleveland Avenue Homes will eventually be demolished and replaced with new units.
81 new apartments are being built at Brown School Lofts on Highland Avenue. Those units will help replace some of the demolished homes. 40 of these new units are reserved for returning Avenue homes residents who had to relocate.
Their units will soon be demolished to make way for new apartments.
“When you build new development, a multi mix of families and incomes is best practice, and it allows people to see there’s those opportunities to continue to rise and move up and be around families that are on various socio-economic levels,” Winston-Salem Assistant City Manager Patrice Toney said.
