North Carolina has been experiencing a growing demand for nurses, even before the pandemic. Predictions suggest a significant nursing shortage over the next decade. By 2033, the state could lack about 12,500 registered nurses (RNs) and over 5,000 licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The most significant RN shortage is expected in hospitals, followed by nursing homes, extended care, and assisted living facilities. These facilities could also lose up to 50% of LPNs, with hospitals potentially losing up to 31.7% by 2033.

To address this potential health care shortage, Davidson-Davie Community College and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist launched a registered nursing apprenticeship program for adults in 2020. This program aims to address the nursing shortage in their community. It follows the ‘earn and learn model’, allowing participants to earn income while receiving job training.

The program allows students in the college’s associate degree nursing (ADN) program to work in the health care industry while preparing academically to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This dual approach offers practical experience and academic readiness, creating a stronger workforce.
