Curtis Cheeks named High Point police chief following retirement of Travis Stroud

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The High Point Police Department now has a new chief after former Chief Travis Stroud retired late last year.

Stroud was named to the job of chief in May 2021. He was with the HPPD since 1995 and retired on Nov. 30.

The city announced Monday that Curtis Cheeks III has been appointed as the chief of police effective July 1.

“Curtis has effectively and passionately answered the call to lead the police department through the last several months of transition. He has demonstrated the ability to lead our men and women of law enforcement for years to come,” City Manager Logan Ford said.

Cheeks previously served as interim chief of police, assistant chief of the support services division, commander of the investigations section and lieutenant over the strategic intelligence unit, community engagement unit and public information office. He also served as a field training supervisor.

Cheeks holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a master’s degree from Florida Metropolitan University.
