Triad woman makes pillows for pets waiting on forever homes

(WGHP) — Searching for a way to give fabric scraps a new purpose led to a cozy creation for pets waiting on a forever home.

Fabric artist Melinda Harris has been sewing since she was four years old.

She knows how hard it is for quilters to throw away their scraps.

“It kills us to put them in the trash,” she said. “I thought, ‘You know there’s bound to be something that these can be used for.’”

She called the Forsyth Humane Society to see if handmade pillows could be something that would be useful for its animals.

“They said, ‘Oh, that would be amazing,” she said.

Harris was given instructions on what sizes would be suitable for cat cushions and dog cushions.

Her friend Joanne Vincent provided the pillow squares that would later be filled with the stuffing, and her cousin Debra Wilson was in town from Texas and chipped in, too.

“I think it’s very important that you commit to your community, and you be a part of your community by doing whatever you can do. If it’s stuffing cat beds, if it’s doing whatever … you help your community in some way” Wilson said.
