Delaware pulls away from North Carolina A&T in the second half

This one was hardly smooth sailing from start to finish.

But Delaware was at its best early on and then again in the second half as the Blue Hens put away a 42-13 win at North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon.

The game was Delaware’s first of the year against a Coastal Athletic Association football opponent — although technically the Hens (2-0) aren’t eligible for the league title as they transition to FBS.

The Hens jumped out to an 18-0 lead but were in front only 21-13 at halftime after the Aggies (1-2) returned an interception for a touchdown.

Delaware, however, reeled off three unanswered second-half touchdowns at it beat North Carolina A&T for the second time since the former MEAC squad joined the CAA last season.

“Once we settled in, I felt like we kind of controlled the game,” said Delaware coach Ryan Carty. “I felt like we controlled the game in the first half, too, it just didn’t look like it on the scoreboard yet.”

The biggest drawback to the victory was that standout running back Marcus Yarns left the game with an apparent leg injury midway through the first half. He finished with 40 yards and a TD on eight carries.
