Scuppernong Books in Greensboro to host homelessness town hall

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — When it comes to homelessness in Greensboro, the amount of people in need is growing, and the resources are overwhelmed.

Downtown businesses want to build a united front to find solutions and help the people on the streets. They say it starts with a conversation.

Scuppernong Books is hosting a town hall at their store to invite leaders at the Interactive Resource Center, clients at the IRC and anyone else who lives or works downtown to ask questions, get answers and find out how to work together.

“I see these people every day,” said Steve Mitchell, one of the owners at Scuppernong Books. He has seen the homelessness issues up close for the last 14 years. “They need more help than they are getting, and there is only so much that we can do as a downtown business.”

He doesn’t have all the answers, but he does have the space for people to come together.

“For a long time, it has sort of been a side issue that has been swept under the rug or kept over someplace, and I think we need to kind of start to talk about … a major issue in our community because these are people who are part of our community,” Mitchell said.
