New store donates $5,000 to school

SELMA — In celebration of its newest store, retailer Burlington donated $5,000 to Pine Level Elementary School for classroom supplies.

“We are grateful to be partners with Burlington Stores,” Eric C. Bracy, superintendent of Johnston County Public Schools, said in a news release. “Their generous act will be used to further the education of some of our amazing students, in one of our most remarkable schools, Pine Level Elementary. We are fortunate to have businesses that value education and support our community in ways such as this.”

The partnership began when Burlington got in touch, said Faitha Batten, the district’s executive director of Title 1, a federal program that provides financial support to lower-income schools. “Burlington reached out … and said, ‘We would like to give a donation to adopt … a Title 1 school who’s the closest to our new store,’ which happens to be Pine Level Elementary,” she said.

The donation will allow Pine Level Elementary teachers to purchase classroom supplies. The $5,000 will be available to the school as a credit on AdoptAClassroom.org , a nonprofit that provides money for supplies.
