Sallie B. Howard School of Arts and Science received a national Elementary and Secondary Education Act Distinguished Schools Award for excellence in serving special populations of students with disabilities. The award was announced at the N.C. Association of Federal Education Program Administrators luncheon in Greensboro on Oct. 23.
The National Elementary and Secondary Education Act Distinguished Schools program is a project of the National Association of Elementary and Secondary Education Act State Program Administrators that publicly recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for positive educational advances and the outstanding academic achievement of its students.
As a state winner, Sallie B. Howard is one of two Title I schools that will represent North Carolina at the National Elementary and Secondary Education Act conference in Austin, Texas, in February. The award includes a $12,500 grant to cover the cost of sending a team of staff to the national conference.
Sallie B. Howard was selected by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction out of 2,700 schools based on data rankings from 2023-2024 state exams. More than 52% of students in the students with a disabilities category passed the end-of-grade testing last year compared to 19% passing in the state and 21% in Wilson County, according to Sallie B. Howard school officials.
