NORTH CAROLINA (WGHP) — Some teenage crime is on the rise, Piedmont Triad police say.
According to a video posted to X by the Greensboro Police Department, these crimes include armed robberies, serious assault or shooting into occupied homes.
“These are not childish acts,” one officer in the video says.
In December 2019, the Raise the Age law became effective ; however, in June of this year, a part of the law changed.
Starting December 1, a new state law will go into effect , charging 16 and 17-year-olds who were charged with class A through E felonies as adults immediately.
With the new law in effect, 16 and 17-year-olds who were previously charged in adult court may have their cases removed to juvenile court jurisdiction.
Additionally, 13, 14 and 15-year-olds may be moved from adult criminal court to juvenile delinquency court.
16 and 17-year-olds charged with an F through I felony offense and non-motor vehicle misdemeanor offenses will still be processed in juvenile delinquency court.
