Triad cities offer winter shelter to those facing homelessness

(WGHP) — With winter here, cities across the Triad are working with local organizations to offer food and shelter to people experiencing homelessness.

In High Point, Open Door Ministries has expanded its cold weather shelter program, which runs every night from December through March. The program welcomes 20 additional people each night, providing them with dinner, breakfast and a warm place to sleep.

“This program is about more than just food and a bed. It’s about helping our neighbors who need it most,” said Ivan Huffman, director of advancement at Open Door Ministries. “A warm place to stay can give someone hope and a reason to keep going.”

The City of High Point provides funding for the program, which is vital.

“Without the city’s support and help from the community, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” Huffman said.

In Greensboro, Urban Ministry is also expanding its efforts, adding 57 beds to its Weaver House Shelter for the winter months. The expansion is funded by $425,000 from the city and other community support.
