Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers warns of scams this holiday season

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers said you need to be on alert to avoid falling victim to a scam.

He announced there has been a recent increase in scam reports since the Thanksgiving holiday.

While it’s not a new scam, Rogers said he wants you to be aware. Scammers are contacting people, impersonating law enforcement officials and getting away with their money.

Rogers said since Thanksgiving, he has personally been reached out to seven times by people who said they’ve gotten calls.

He said nearly 15 people have alerted the sheriff’s office about being contacted by someone impersonating law enforcement.

The scammers are asking people to pay fines for missing court dates and saying a warrant will be issued if the person does not pay up.

He said in some cases, the scammer has gotten away with the cash.

With the recent increase, he wants you to remember the sheriff’s office would never ask you to do this.

“Not only are they scamming through text messages or phone calls, but they have also been sending out letters to people … If you get a letter from someone or from an organization saying that you owe money or you have received an award to pick up this amount of money … reach out to your local law enforcement organization and ask them to help you with seeing and make sure that is correct or not,” Rogers said.
