GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Less than a year after Greensboro Police Sergeant Dale Nix was killed in the line of duty , the community is mourning the loss of another officer, Michael Horan , who was killed on December 23, 2024.
To honor Officer Horan’s sacrifice, the nonprofit group Operation Fly Our Flag is organizing a memorial ride that will take place on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
“It’s a hard hit for Greensboro PD to lose two officers within the same year—not even in the same incident,” said Nathan Sheppard, president of Operation Fly Our Flag. “For them to have to bear that on their hearts and minds has really taken a toll on them as a law enforcement family.”

Operation Fly Our Flag hosted a similar ride in January 2024 for Sergeant Nix, who was killed in the line of duty on December 30, 2023. That event brought together more than a thousand vehicles and raised over $20,000 for Nix’s family.
“These rides are part of a healing process,” Sheppard said. “To see that many people show up and see that level of support, it’s overwhelming.”
