Jeff Bezos fund donates largest single gift of $5 million to North Carolina Salvation Army

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Salvation Army of Greensboro received a $5 million grant from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez through the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund on Monday.

This is the seventh year that the Day 1 Families Fund has awarded grants to organizations across the country that work to end family homelessness, according to a SAoG news release.

The SAoG has been serving the community since 1904.

“What a way to end our 120th year of service to the Greensboro community with this incredible gift,” Salvation Army of Greensboro Corps Officer Captain Chris Raymer said. “We are thrilled to be entrusted with these funds to be able to make an even greater impact on those we serve over the next five years. We know that with this gift we will be able to see more families off the streets and into stable housing.”

Raymer says they won’t use all the money at once. Instead, they’ll use it to help 30 families in need per year over the next five years. The plan right now is to use $1 million a year to expand the Pathway to Success program.
