Man riding moped killed after ‘failure to yield’ at Lexington Ave, Cook Street intersection, High Point police say

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The High Point Police Department is investigating a fatal crash caused by a “failure to yield.”

Just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were called to Lexington Avenue and Cook Street about a crash. Upon arrival, they found man, identified as Douglas Gregory Haggerty, of High Point, dead at the scene.

New Year’s Eve crash closes Interstate 85 North in Randolph County

Investigators say that Haggerty was riding a moped on East Lexington Avenue and was hit by a vehicle turning off of Cook Street that failed to yield. The driver was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to yield from a stop sign and no operator’s license.

This is the 8th traffic fatality in High Point in 2024.

The roads were closed for several hours while investigators cleared the scene.
