PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — Temperatures fall below freezing this evening with many in the 20s by 9 p.m. Overnight, we’ll continue to see mostly clear skies with temperatures falling into the low 20s Sunday morning. While we’ll start the day with mostly sunny skies, clouds will roll in by the afternoon Sunday and temperatures will reach the low 40s.
All eyes will be on the weather from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. Data is trying to bring a burst of snow or sleet Sunday afternoon between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. However, the potential for this to happen is very low due to incredibly dry air at the surface that will still be in place on Sunday afternoon. While snow/sleet may try to fall Sunday afternoon, the layer of dry air at the surface means whatever falls will likely evaporate before reaching the ground. If the snow falls at a heavy intensity, it could bring moisture into the lower levels allowing some flakes to reach the ground.
By Sunday evening, slightly warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere will move in, which means we’re more likely to see rain or freezing rain overnight Sunday through early Monday morning. The higher potential to see freezing rain will be in the mountains and foothills. The best time to see the rain/freezing rain mix will be between midnight and 9 AM. Ice accumulation around 0.1″ to 0.25″ is possible in the mountains and foothills as well as in Stokes, Rockingham and Caswell counties. Slick spots will be likely in the mountains and foothills Monday morning and possibly in the Triad so be sure to use extra caution on the roadways.
