CORNELIUS – Michael Jordan’s Lake Norman estate was demolished on Feb. 21.
The property has a rich history dating back to its original owners, James (Jim) and Betty Smith, who had previously lived in Winston-Salem and worked for Dairy Fresh in Charlotte. The home was built in 1993 by custom builder Randy Poore. After constructing the home, the Smiths moved in and later partnered with Tom Stevenson to build Spare Time, the first bowling alley in the Lake Norman area. This venture contributed significantly to the region’s growth and entertainment scene.
The property was later purchased by renowned drag racer Doug Herbert and his wife, Ginger. The Herberts initially listed the home for nearly $4 million in 2016. However, after an unsuccessful sale attempt, the bank foreclosed on the property in August 2012.
