South Carolina inmate sentenced for killing Winston-Salem man, police captain to be executed after 19 years

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina man will be put to death next month after spending nearly 20 years on death row.

41-year-old Mikal D. Mahdi was sentenced to death in 2006 for murder, burglary and larceny in connection to the 2004 death of Orangeburg Police Captain James Myers.

Mahdi is said to have shot Myers nine times, covering his body with diesel fuel and setting it on fire. Three days before that, Mahdi shot and killed Christopher Boggs, a convenience store employee from Winston-Salem. He’s also serving a life sentence from North Carolina as a result…
