Whole Foods suing Friendly Center owner over asbestos issue that led to store closure in 2023

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Editor’s note: The video attached is from previous reporting in 2023 when asbestos issues first emerged.

Whole Foods is suing CBL Properties, the parent company of Greensboro’s Friendly Center, as well as retail company Transformco, over an issue that caused the location on West Friendly Avenue to close for several weeks in 2023 after asbestos was detected inside the store.

According to documents filed to the North Carolina business court, Whole Foods claims CBL-Friendly and Transformco breached their contracts by failing to take precautions to ensure the store at Friendly Center would not be impacted by the demolition and reconstruction of the adjacent old Sears building…
