Randolph County program now offers GPS watches for people that wander off

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — It’s almost daily that a law enforcement agency in the Triad reports someone with a cognitive disability wandered off from their home. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office has a new tool it hopes will take away some concerns.

The sheriff’s office expanded what it calls the Guardian Project. The project is tailored to help those with cognitive disabilities like autism, dementia or Alzheimer’s. Phase 2 of the project includes watches that have GPS trackers in them and allow those with disabilities to talk with loved ones.

“I think it’s going to be a phenomenal deal to be able to have them in real time,” Sgt. Tammy Brady, Community Outreach Officer with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, said…
