GREENSBORO, N.C. — When you say the words ‘identity theft,’ your mind immediately goes to the computer hacker who steals your information. Believe it or not, identity theft happens in an old-fashioned way, like thieves looking through trash for documents.
“They are still going through our trash. They are looking for so many different things. They are looking for our name, our address, and our mother’s maiden name. They’re also looking for things like phone numbers, username and password, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, driver’s license or identification numbers, and tax information,” said Lechelle Yates from Better Business Bureau.
You might just throw out mail with that information on it, making it easy for an identity thief, or maybe you strip shred it or tear it up– thinking that will do the trick. It doesn’t…
