Piedmont Triad nonprofit helps to furnish homes

You likely watch FOX8 from the comfort of your sofa, or maybe you’re sitting at the breakfast table. That is a luxury that thousands of people in the Piedmont Triad don’t have.

They worked hard to get a roof over their heads, but they can’t afford to furnish their home. One nonprofit agency is working to change that, and it recently expanded with the help of a local community foundation.

“It costs the average North Carolinian $3,500 to $5,000 dollars to furnish a two-bedroom apartment. Now that’s a mighty sum. If you’ve already done the hard work of getting stable housing, putting forth deposits, getting utilities taken care of, food for the table, food for children, clothing, those are priorities. Often furniture takes a back seat.”

That’s why, since 2006, The Barnabas Network has collected gently used furniture and home furnishings at its warehouse in Greensboro. It is the Triad’s only nonprofit furniture bank, one of only about 80 nationwide, and it provides furniture to families for free.
