Oak Ridge housing takes off with airport growth

OAK RIDGE, N.C. — As companies at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) grow, so do the neighborhoods nearby. One town seeing the biggest transformation? Oak Ridge—about seven miles away and booming.

The demand for homes in Oak Ridge is so high that many houses are sold before construction even begins. What used to be dense forest just a year and a half ago is now a row of newly built homes.

Samyra and Walt Wooten, owners of WD Custom Homes, are part of that growth. They’re building some of the homes popping up across Oak Ridge. Samyra and Walt moved to Oak Ridge back in 2012 when their first son was just under a year old. Drawn by the area’s strong schools and family-friendly vibe, they planted roots and later changed careers to meet the growing need for housing. Samyra, once a physical therapist, and Walt, who worked in apparel, now focus on building neighborhoods in Greenboro’s suburbs…
