FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A TikTok challenge is causing major headaches for some Triad school districts.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is warning parents about an emerging online challenge, called the “Chromebook challenge,” in which students are encouraged to insert objects, such as paper clips or push pins, into the USB ports of school-issued Chromebooks. The viral challenge could lead to fires, according to the school district.

District officials say the trend could have serious consequences for students.

Statement from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

“We need you to know that there is an emerging TikTok trend where students are being influenced to insert items such as pencil lead, paper clips, push pins, etc. into the USB ports on Chromebooks. This action can cause a short circuit resulting in personal injury and/or potential fire risk. This will also cause damage to the Chromebook, possibly rendering it unusable. This is a direct violation of our district’s responsible use of technology policy. (6161).
