Guilford County Schools considering consolidation of 4 elementary schools amid enrollment decline

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County Schools announced on Wednesday that it is considering closing four elementary schools because of declining enrollment.

The four schools up for consideration are Madison, Southern, Vandalia and Washington Elementary Schools. Under the proposal, the schools would be consolidated in the 2026-27 or 2027-28 school years.

According to the district, both Madison and Southern were recommended for closure back in 2019 based on their condition and small capacity/enrollment. The district also recommended the rebuilding of both Vandalia and Washington, but “neither school has the projected enrollment to make rebuilding necessary.”…
