A Burlington man stands accused of insurance fraud after allegedly collecting disability payments while gainfully employed. Edgar Octavio Ambrocio Perez, 26, has been charged with a pair of felonies: insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense. The North Carolina Department of Insurance revealed that Perez wrongfully obtained $8,736.56 from Specialty Insurance Co., as he was reportedly working for Donley’s Concrete Group during the time he received the temporary disability payments.
The situation unfolded between September 4 and December 5 of the previous year, with Perez’s activities coming to light following an investigation by the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. According to the arrest warrant, the 26-year-old was not only on the payroll at Donley’s but actively working while he simultaneously collected disability checks. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey strongly denounced the act. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Commissioner Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums,” as stated in the press release.
Perez was apprehended in Robeson County yesterday and subsequently released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. He is slated for an appearance in Wake County District Court on Friday.
