Winston-Salem Fire Department closes Engine 18 citing staffing, budget challenges

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — The Winston-Salem Fire Department has temporarily browned out Engine 18 on Saturday due to staffing challenges and budgetary constraints, according to a news release.

“This difficult but necessary decision was made to maintain operational effectiveness across the city while ensuring the safety of both our community and personnel,” the release states.

Browning out is the temporary closure of a fire station on a rotating or as-needed basis without permanently reducing staffing or eliminating services, allowing the department to manage limited personnel and funding while avoiding burnout among first responders…
