GREENSBORO, N.C. — U.S. measles cases are widening their lead on the 2019 outbreak, reaching a 33-year high per Johns Hopkins University data released early July. The full impact on the Piedmont Triad remains to be seen, as families try to evade the contagious illness before more health threats loom with the school year.

Thurs., July 10 is the three-week mark since a child with measles touched down at PTI Airport in Greensboro on a three-day visit to Guilford and Forsyth Cos.

THE ANSWER

It is appearing unlikely the confirmed Triad measles case will cause a statewide outbreak, but the window of possible symptom onset does not close until Sat., July 12.

THE PROCESS

The NCDHHS confirms as of now, the measles case traced to the Triad July 19 is, still, the only known case confirmed in the state this year.

In a statement issued to WFMY Wednesday, the agency said, “As of July 9, 2025, there have been zero additional confirmed cases of measles in North Carolina. NCDHHS staff and our local health department partners are continuing to monitor for potential cases, including any that might be related to the confirmed case reported last month.”…
