Private road in Burlington washed out, neighbors take action

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Just off Highway 49, Tangle Ridge Trail turns into gravel—and for the people who live along it, that gravel turned proved vulnerable after Tropical Storm Chantal on Sunday.

The rain caused flash flooding that swept away nearly 30 feet of the creek bank beside the only road in and out of the neighborhood. What’s left is a fragile stretch of gravel and mud that could collapse again with the next heavy rain.

It took less than an hour for the water to rise nearly eight feet, turning the creek into rapids…
