Dangerous heat followed by a much needed cool down

Dangerous heat is on the way to the Piedmont Sunday and Monday. High temperatures will easily break the upper 90s with feels like temperature settling around 105. Thanks to this, heat advisories have already been issued for Stanly, Anson, and Richmond counties, with more counties likely to be added. Whether you’re one of the lucky contestants to get these advisories or not, the story will be the same. Oppressive heat and humidity that can turn dangerous when not staying hydrated. I’d recommend keeping the water handy, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Rain chances look to remain pretty low in the Piedmont, with a couple afternoon storms possible, especially north of I-40 the next 2 days. Another way to beat the heat would be a trip to the High Country, where temperatures will top out in the low 80s with higher rain chances thanks to stout NW flow.

By Tuesday, we shake things up in a big way. Our friends in New England will help to share much drier and cooler air with a backdoor cold front that will work down the spine of the Appalachian chain. The models are fighting a bit over the timing of this, but Monday night through Tuesday looks to be the timeframe when rain chances rise thanks to frontal passage. After the front passes, we will be gifted with below average temperatures AND humidity! Unfortunately, it is July so it won’t last too long, but expect a wonderful Wednesday, with a gradual return to heat and muggy air through the end of the week.
