WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Sick and vacation time for Winston-Salem firefighters is on the chopping block.
“We risk our lives for these citizens because we believe in selfless service and sacrifice, and because we love to do so, but firefighters will leave the job if they don’t feel valued,” Ashton Perry, the Winston-Salem Professional Firefighters Association president, said.

Perry says right now, fire department employees who work 56-hour weeks, many on long shifts, earn sick and vacation time at a rate of 24 hours per day. However, under the new proposal, that will be cut down in half to just 12 hours a day…
