WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Forecasters say a wet and stormy pattern has returned to North Carolina this weekend, with flash flooding risks already emerging and more rain possible next week as the tropics develop.
Rainfall Totals and Flooding Risk
The National Weather Service reported that 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen across the Foothills, Piedmont Triad, and Mountain regions. Additional downpours are expected through Saturday evening, with forecasters warning of training rain bands that could trigger localized flash flooding.
Meteorologists noted a temporary break in the storms around midday Saturday, but another evening line of storms is expected to move northeast across the state.
Weekend Weather Outlook
Highs will stay in the 70s with plenty of clouds Saturday. While Sunday may bring slightly drier conditions, the overall forecast remains unsettled as waves of showers continue across the region.
Tropical System Developing
Looking ahead, forecasters are tracking Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, which could strengthen into a named storm — possibly Tropical Storm Imelda — over the weekend.
Although there is uncertainty about its track and intensity, meteorologists warn that if the storm churns near the North Carolina coast, it could bring torrential coastal downpours, dangerous surf, and inland tropical rainbands between Monday and Thursday next week.
Residents Urged to Prepare
