Dentists had not started procedure before 2-year-old died at Valleygate Dental Surgery Center, NC dental board says

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A North Carolina state board has provided new information regarding the death of a toddler at a Greensboro dental office.

On Tuesday, the investigative panel of the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners announced that it had concluded an investigation into Valleygate Dental Surgery Center in Greensboro and the July 17 death of 2-year-old Er’mias Mitchell.

According to the board, the panel determined that dentists and dental personnel had not begun any procedures when Er’mias suffered a medical emergency. Other licensed medical providers handled anesthesia and sedation services.

“The Investigative Panel of the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners has concluded its investigation into the events of July 17, 2025, at the Valleygate Dental Surgery Center in Greensboro, NC and the tragic death of a two-year old. The Panel has determined that no dental procedures were performed prior to the medical emergency that occurred on that date and that the facility involved is regulated by another agency. It also determined that no dentist or other dental personnel were involved in the administration of any anesthesia or sedation to the patient. Rather, these services were performed by other licensed medical providers. The Board understands that the investigation of those providers by other agencies may be ongoing and that the Medical Examiner has not yet issued a report, including the cause of death.”
