Families push for change as Guilford County faces high infant mortality rates

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Advocates and families gathered in Guilford County this week for a candlelight vigil to honor infancy and pregnancy losses — and to call attention to the county’s high infant mortality rate and racial disparities.

Of nearly 6,000 babies born in the county each year, more than 50 do not live to see their first birthday. State data shows that about 70% of those babies are African American.
