Tragic Early Morning Crash on I-40 in Durham Claims Life of Kernersville Woman, Injures Sister

Yesterday morning, an incident occurred on Interstate 40 West near Page Road, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to another. According to the Durham Police Department and cited by CBS 17, 24-year-old Brijette Basden of Kernersville had stopped her Ford Fusion on the side of the highway to switch drivers with her sister when both were struck by a passing vehicle.

The incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. Authorities reported that Brijette Basden was fatally injured when a 2003 Toyota Camry, traveling in the left lane, struck the sisters and their car. The collision caused a chain reaction, with the Camry being hit by another vehicle, a 2021 model, resulting in significant congestion on the interstate, as per WRAL. Basden’s sister, Asrael Basden, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Following the crash, I-40 West experienced heavy congestion for several hours, with traffic nearly at a standstill until lanes gradually reopened around 11 a.m. The North Carolina Department of Transportation notified drivers of the closure, and traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up like a parking lot as they waited to merge into the open lanes…
