Forgotten legend revived: ‘The Witch of Inverness’ haunts High Point history

HIGH POINT, N.C. — If cemeteries are where stories sleep, libraries are where they wake.

Tucked between aging newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, and brittle pages inside the Heritage Research Center in High Point are the breadcrumbs of a community’s past. Ghost stories, legends, and folktales don’t just haunt homes… they haunt history.

“This is years of accumulation through different staff members,” said librarian Larry Cates, gesturing to a folder filled with decades of research. “This is just one more means by which people ascribe meaning to the past, and they often add. It’s not a matter of fact in this case, it’s a matter of significance.”…
