Rockingham County DA rules fatal deputy-involved shooting justified after domestic violence suspect fired at officers

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office has determined that sheriff’s deputies were justified in the shooting and killing of a domestic violence suspect who shot at them while they attempted to serve an arrest warrant on October 7, 2025.

The incident began on the night of Oct. 6, when the DA’s office said Graciela Martinez reported that her boyfriend Shavon Curtis Smith had assaulted her at her home.
