Autopsy released for fallen Greensboro police officer Michael Horan

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An autopsy released Wednesday confirmed Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan died from multiple gunshot wounds after he was shot inside a Food Lion on Dec. 23, 2024.

Horan, who was 44, was the first officer to respond to a call about a man with a firearm at the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive that day. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said in the autopsy that Horan made contact with the suspect, and “during a pat down of another individual, a struggle ensued and the other individual shot (Horan) multiple times.”

The autopsy by the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner lists Horan’s cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide. The report documents five gunshot wounds in total — three to the head, one to the chest and one to the abdomen — and notes severe internal injuries…
