Snow expected in Piedmont Triad on Friday morning

PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — It’s going to be a beautiful, sunny day with highs in the mid-40s! We will have mostly clear skies overnight too, and lows are going to chill back to the upper-20s by daybreak tomorrow.

Thursday is going to be the warmest day of the week, as highs reach the lower-50s. This warm-up is occurring as a cold front approaches the state, pushing milder air into the Piedmont ahead of the front. We are expecting the cold front to arrive around dinnertime Thursday evening, and behind the front, a cold blast of air will produce a favorable environment for the possibility of wintry weather.

Early Friday morning, we are expecting light snow to begin first in the mountains, then spread eastward into the Triad. There will be varying types of precipitation across the Piedmont with a wide range of outcomes.  Highs will be cold, in the mid-30s. The precipitation ends well before the afternoon commute.

  • North of the Triad, this will be an all-snow morning commute and you could have 1″ to 1.5″ of snow.
  • In the Triad, we will briefly have all snow, then change to a rain/snow mix later in the morning.  We are expecting less than an inch of accumulating snow, likely melting by lunchtime.
  • South of the Triad, some snow will mix with a cold rain.  Little, if any, accumulation is expected.

Over the weekend, temperatures will recover nicely to the mid- to upper-40s. Saturday and Sunday will be mostly cloudy.

Monday morning could bring another brief snow to the Piedmont!  It will be brief and we’ll have partly cloudy skies by afternoon with highs near 40…
