Helping Hands provides essential food assistance

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The lapse in SNAP benefits during the government shutdown showed just how vulnerable many families are. Food banks saw a huge increase in demand.Helping Hands in High Point was one of the places where families turned for food and help from a community foundation made it possible.

“In the last four years, we’ve gone from serving 100 families a week to over 700, and last year we were serving 500 and something, so we’ve gone up almost 200 in just the last year.”

More than 700 families need help to get nutritious food, and they found it at Helping Hands, a nonprofit in High Point that makes sure families have food on the table and children have food in their backpacks for either school or home. Executive Director Steve Key says the help doesn’t stop there. The agency also provides financial assistance, rent and utility assistance, and educational programs, including financial classes and cooking classes…
