PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — Winter Weather Advisory is in place for the majority of the Piedmont Triad from early Monday morning to around midday Tuesday. Temperatures will be decreasing throughout the day Monday while moisture moves through, giving us the potential for wintry weather to start the work week.
Starting between 5 AM and 7 AM on Monday, a rain/snow mix will make its way through the mountains and foothills and into the Triad. A rain/snow mix continues through mid-morning (~9 AM) and then transitions to snow showers from mid-morning Monday through early afternoon as colder air filters in. Snow showers look to become more scattered through the afternoon as dry air begins to filter in. Lingering scattered snow showers are possible through sundown.
Since temperatures at the surface will remain above freezing until about midday, it should take a little bit for any accumulations to begin. The main spots that snow could accumulate will be grassy areas and elevated surfaces; roads should be too warm for accumulation. The further north you are, closer to the NC/VA border, snowfall totals are a little higher with decreasing accumulation amounts further south. A good chunk of the Triad looks to see a dusting up to 1″. Here’s what accumulations could look like in the Piedmont Triad.
Temperatures will be falling throughout the day Monday which means anything that’s wet by the end of the day, is going to freeze overnight. Black ice and slick spots will be a concern Monday night through Tuesday morning. Our temperatures will be below freezing by the middle of the afternoon on Monday and we’ll drop into the teens by Tuesday morning.
With temperatures well below freezing Tuesday morning, it’ll likely take until about mid-morning to start thawing out some. Temperatures by the afternoon reach the upper 30s with mostly sunny skies.
On Wednesday skies will be partly cloudy with morning lows in the low 30s and highs in the low 50s. Thursday temperatures start in the mid 30s and reach the upper 40s by the afternoon…
