GREENSBORO, N.C. — The City of Greensboro kicked off a yearlong celebration Sunday honoring the “Greensboro Six,” marking 70 years since six Black men — Dr. George Simkins Jr., Phillip Cook, Elijah Herring, Samual Murray, Joseph Sturdivant and Leon Wolfe — challenged the whites-only policy at Gillespie Golf Course in 1955, a stand that ultimately led to the course’s integration.
City leaders, community members and surviving family gathered at the historic course for a ceremony that included a ceremonial tee shot and the screening of a short film documenting the group’s story and the 2024 mural created in their honor.
