The Greensboro Fire Department recently marked the 40th anniversary of the Davie Street fire, which occurred on April 13, 1985. The three-alarm fire was the largest in the department’s modern history. It destroyed a city block and damaged several downtown Greensboro buildings. More than 100 firefighters responded and worked for over four hours. They faced risks such as a backdraft and a wall collapse. No serious injuries or deaths were reported.
Retired Assistant Chief Chris Bowman, with support from Deputy Chief Carol Key and other retired firefighters, created a 20-minute documentary about the fire.
