Students return to North Forsyth as parents, experts weigh emotional toll of stabbing

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Students returned to North Forsyth High School this week following a stabbing on campus, but parents and mental health experts say fear and trauma will not disappear simply because classes have resumed.

Families described a wide range of reactions as students returned to the building, from cautious optimism to ongoing fear. A trauma expert says those differences are normal and expected after a violent incident, especially one amplified by social media.

Tory Williams, a North Forsyth alum, said the stabbing brought back painful memories. Williams said her daughter was a senior four years ago when a shooting happened at Mount Tabor High School.
